In non-prod databases, I use Java to facilitate one part of our data refreshes. In Prod, I don't use Java (that I know of), but still keep a minimal Java pool just in case Oracle uses it somewhere I'm unaware of (e.g. XML, as others have mentioned). The evil of at least 1 granule of potentially wasted RAM is worth the possible downtime prevention.
