RE: What is the OEM open cursor method really reflect??

There was an email from Chris King with the above title in it which I accidentally deleted and an Outlook bug is showing me incorrect content for the body of that email in my Deleted Items folder so now I can't see the actual email. L Of course, I could find the email on Freelists but that sounds like too much work. J  

The thrust of the question, though, was what is the use of the OEM metric OPEN_CURSORS. While there is substantial gory detail I could go into, the bottom line is this particular metric dates back to the days when tuning it was thought to be important (in many ways like we once used to worry about that wonderful BCHR!). Though somewhat dated, there is a whitepaper from the Shared Pool dev team that went into the details of how SESSION_CACHED_CURSORS and OPEN_CURSORS worked (it's located HYPERLINK "http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/manageability/ps-s003-274003-106-1-fin-v2-128827.pdf"here if you're really that interested). The bottom line nowadays is that ADDM will report if OPEN_CURSORS is undersized and what value to set it to. So have a look at an ADDM report, set and forget is really the recommendation now. J
