(a) Here are my relevant environment variables:
PATH=/usr/vendor/oracle/client/18.104.22.168/bin:/usr/vendor/oracle/client/9.2 .0.6/Apache/Apache/bin:/usr/vendor/oracle/client/22.214.171.124/OPatch:/usr/loc al/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/openwin/bin:/usr/lib:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/ccs/bin:/usr/sadm/admin/bin:/usr/ucb
ORACLE_DOC=/usr/vendor/oracle/client/126.96.36.199/doc TNS_ADMIN=/usr/vendor/oracle/client/188.8.131.52/network/admin LD_LIBRARY_PATH_64=/usr/vendor/oracle/client/184.108.40.206/lib LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:/usr/openwin/lib:/usr/vendor/oracle/client/9.2. 0.6/lib
(b) I'm confused about your opinion of LD_LIBRARY_PATH. I've clearly read at many places that it should be set to $ORACLE_HOME/lib to avoid any error during install.

My guess is that its a problem with the setting of one or other of your environment variables. In particular, I would suggest
- checking the instructions for setting environment variables in the installation docs (http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/A96167_01/pre.htm#sthref228)
- don't set LD_LIBRARY_PATH, its usually an accident waiting to happen in my experience.
