Re: why do I need dbcontrol?

As one who HATED, repeat HATED, OEM prior to version 9i, I have to say I'm a convert now. One nice things about Database Control is that it makes a number of checklist intensive processes very easy to follow. In 11g, try flashback transaction without it or RAT... it can be done, but it's much harder.

OEM is great for the JR. DBA who wants to get backups setup, and for some good monitoring.

GC can be a pain to setup, but once it is up and running, it's a great tool. We use it here and it's stable and very helpful.

I have worked at a number of sites in the
past where EM was set up to manage all the databases and I never saw a successful
implementation.
However, working at a Dutch bank they had
a wonderful set up and I gained a new found confidence in it.
 
I initially installed dbcontrol for each server
which was OK but very fiddly and needed support and then I have set up GC for a
number of databases and servers and it is a lot easier than it used to be and
the advantages (smtp alerts especially) are quite significant.

V2 is very stable and performs reasonably well.  I personally think that
Grid OEM was a step backward in Database Administration capability compared
to V9 OEM.  But nobody asked me what I thought of the idea, so Oracle
went ahead and changed everything!
