RE: why do I need dbcontrol?

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, but forgive me if this is a repeat. I think the best benefit of DB Control is the GUI for ASH, and the email alerts, but both of those require the Diagnostics Pack license, so in my opinion the value of DB Control is greatly dependent on whether or not you have that licensed. If you don't have the Diag license, you might as well just use the Java OEM and command line. Of course there is the benefit of centralized visibility/management if you're running Grid Control OEM, but you asked specifically about DB Control. Another option you can consider is installing and configuring DB Control, but just shutting it down (emctl stop dbconsole) most the time and only starting it up when you really need it.
