I think you've got the idea. Delve into parallel cautiously and monitor it, then gradually increase it until you find the optimum point where the queries run as fast as possible without hogging all the resources. The other area is to get to know your users, who is likely to submit the "query from hell", so you can respond quickly to problems, and educate the users that need education.
