CONTAINS,CATSEARCH, andMATCHES are more effective than plsql equivalent?

If you have installed Oracle text you can use other functions like CONTAINS,CATSEARCH, andMATCHES

My question is if someone knows about some performance test that shows Oracle text functions as better than plsql equivalent functions.
