RMAN commands run from 9.2.0.5 server. Linux RedHat AS 2.1u3 Cron. Target database 8.1.7.4 OpenVMS 7.3-2
Catalog database original 8.1.7.4 upgraded with "catalog upgrade" command. OpenVMS 7.3-2

There are three general rules:
1=A1=A2The RMAN catalog schema version (meaning, the version of RMAN=  that created or updated the schema) should be equal or later=  than the catalog database version.
2=A1=A2The version RMAN catalog schema should be equal or later than=  the version of RMAN, that is, the RMAN catalog is backward=  compatible to back up target databases=A1=A3 3=A1=A2Use the same version of the RMAN executable as the target=  database.

your rman tools is 8174 ? or 9.2?
