Ditto on Oracle7 on HP/UX 10.20. As was mentioned here, ipcrm cleans up the rogue objects.

I still don't do an ABORT unless I absolutely have to. Yes, I've seen and read all of the papers saying that it can't do any harm other than forcing instance recovery on startup. Oracle also says that you can't lose data on a properly setup Unix system, but they seem to ignore the function of syncer in making that statement.

If IMMEDIATE works, then I use it. If not, there's something wrong, which may call for an ABORT. And I change any 3rd party script that uses SHUTDOWN ABORT. Hey, I'm paid to be paranoid, right?

It's called "ABORT" for a reason. If it was normal, they'd call it...oh, wait...
