There is also another problem with some Oracle versions on UNIX. The infamous Memory Leak. While running 8.0.4.2 on Tru64 we were obligated to recycle the database and application every 4-6 week to keep on top of the memory creep.

Pat,
An Oracle Instance (at least on an UNIX box) has no problem running for quite an
extented period of time. However, in the case of recycling the physical box,
you should check Metalink. A bug was posted concerning boxes that were up > 248
days.
