For plants such as the one I work at there really is no choice. I get to work with maybe 3 shutdowns a year. The longer the database runs the better. I have had no issues with this. I would think you would run into OS problems before DB problems. However, in our case, on our major production database, this has not been the case. It has been on other identical machines not running Oracle though. Go figure...

I would like to see some dialog on the following issue : Is there a "need" to cycle an Oracle database ? and if so how frequently ?

IE;
Can you and should you keep a Oracle database up and running continually for 3, 6,..months?
