Rahul,
The answers are against ur questions.

my questions are..
1) the logs from the primary will be copied to the dir specified by the param "standby_archive_dest" of the standby machine, correct ?

will be copied to standby_archive_dest specified in the database reolved by
"STDBY" as in ur param in Primary below.
log_archive_dest_2 = "service=STDBY OPTIONAL reopen=60"

2) as the standby DB is also in ARCHIVELOG mode, what should be the
"LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST" in the standby db ? same as the STANDBY_ARCHIVE_DEST" ?

Yes, same as standby_archive_dest in Standby

3) my dir structure is different ( but the datafile name are same) on both machines,
will i HAVE to use DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT ?

Well, for converting the directory structure of datafiles you need to use DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT .
Oracle has a restriction that you can have only one set of values to convert to another which means you may not have much flexibility in distributing files in different mount points.

AFAIK, LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT is for specifying the change in archived logs. For example, if you keep a different name for standby instance(eg. Standby on same machine) or standby archive_format different than primary, you need to use this param.
Let me know if you have more ?s

List, i'm about to create a standby DB in 8.1.5 (AIX), i have a doubt about the online redo logs of the standby,

i have defined a remote destination in the primary DB log_archive_dest_2 = "service=STDBY OPTIONAL reopen=60"

my questions are..
1) the logs from the primary will be copied to the dir specified by the param "standby_archive_dest" of the standby machine, correct ?

2) as the standby DB is also in ARCHIVELOG mode, what should be the

3) my dir structure is different ( but the datafile name are same) on both machines,
will i HAVE to use DB_FILE_NAME_CONVERT and LOG_FILE_NAME_CONVERT ?

TIA Rahul
