I remember having read a few months ago about a company the boss of
which, Larry E., was claiming running on two servers and four databases
... I think they have armies of DBAs and support staff ... 

More seriously, I know sites where a single DBA looks after 15
databases. IMHO the number of DBAs should be in proportion to the number
of developers and/or rate of new releases. In a stable environment, the
marginal cost of caring for an additional database is low.
