On my 8.1.6 RH6 installation, I did a "find /" and found listener.ora in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin

 Three possibilities come to mind=20

  1. 8i doesn't need a listener.ora file. It defaults the network address to tcp/ip port 1521. The pmon processes for your instances dynamically register themselves with the listener. Hence no listener.ora is needed.=20
  2. The listener.ora can also be in /etc. =20
  3. Some set the $TNS_ADMIN environment variable and that's the location of the listener.ora.=20

More than likely, with 8i, it's #1.
