You will not lose any data when the prod database fails except transactions in online redo logs.

Standby database in 8i has automatic archival, the archived redo logs from primary site can be automatically shipped to the standby site and stored.

In case when primary fails you have to manually make standby database as your primary database. Once you make that YOU CAN NOT GO BACK once your primary database is up. Standby database will be your primary database.
