The 'lightbulb' moment for me was to realise that -
- I should not store 'function' nodes in the menu table at all.
- a rule stating that functions can appear only on 'leaf' menus is unnecessary.
With these two fallacies removed, the design becomes simpler, cleaner, and more robust.
I really am very grateful.
