I sympathize with your thought. The only thing we can save from E/R are some diagraming conventions to use with conceptual models. Something very far from Chen's ambitions.

On the other hand it helped to cause a lot of confusion. When I was studiyng database theory in the university I had to "learn" many weird things about E/R. For instance we were forced to start a database design with an E/R diagram and to use a transformation technique which often leaded to redundant designs.
