Naturally, enterprise systems these days don't provide you connection which you just could run SQL query over. Their "progressive" design pushes XML formatted data to the client. I don't think anybody who dealt with XML based solutions for enterprise application integration would develop anything different from Pascal-like attitude towards XML.
