 System R is a database system built as a research project at IBM San  Jose Research (now IBM Almaden Research Center) in the 1970's. System  R introduced the SQL language and also demonstrated that a relational  system could provide good transaction processing performance.

.... which might be interpreted that it demonstrated a reaonable paradigm match up between system/r's transaction processing and financial infrastructure transaction processing.

now it is obvious that system/r transaction processing capability didn't exist in spreedsheet implementations ... however both basic information organizations just happened to conform pretty well to standard paradigm of some (financial) market segments that had money to spend on new products.
