When I was working on an XML project and finding my programs too slow I put comma or blank delimited text in the XML <data> 0 1 2 3 4 </data>

In one I had multiple subtags each containing a list of numbers, such that corresponding elements in each list were associated. That is, like a structure of arrays instead of an array of structures, which would take many more tags for the slow parser to process. I have a goal of at least 1MB/s for file I/O for such programs.
