Thanks for your replies

I am sorry for not being clearer. I have 2 databases db1 and db2. db1 is accessed by an internal network only, db2 is accesses by the internal network and the other network, its only db2 that is having the problems, db1 remains unaffected. Details of the network are: Internal network:10/100mbs fully switched with 1GB backbone (used by Db1 and DB2)
Other network: Point to Point 2mb with Cisco 2600 router (Db2 only). I have never tried to bounce the listener as I use one listener for both the databases but I will try this next time the error occurs. When the error happens on db2 I tell all users to exit the client application so I can shutdown and restart the database (Db2) so I don't know if it affects new sessions but it definitely affects existing sessions. The Other Network was installed recently and about 2 weeks after use is when the problems started arising but the number of clients increased by 30. I have also taken over the development of the Delphi client software, it is Delphi 5 and it uses oracle components (Direct oracle access) to connect to the database. The network admin refuses point blank that there is anything wrong with the network, he was responsible for the installation of it and he recommended the setup. I basically will have to prove that it is a network problem/fault before he will even consider giving me any details. I have been trying to recreate the error on a development database but I have been unable to get the error. I will try enabling tracing on the listener and as many of the clients as possible to see what this shows.

Thanks again
