Oracle 8 ODBC drivers

I am writing a client server application using Oracle 8.0.4.00 database engine and the Oracle 8 ODBC driver.

When I retrieve data from the database what I expect as dates have trailing 0s. This is causing me problems further down the line with my programs. Is there any way to customise the driver so that I receive a date alone? Is there a better driver that I should be using?
