Net8 and SQL*Net

Maybe a naive question but ..
Can Net8 and SQL*Net 2.3 co-exist?
I have a Personal Oracle 7 installed on my PC and also need to connect to a remote Oracle 8 database. The trouble is that my Net8 Easy Config or Net8 Assistant just does not open up. When I start it the hour glass binks for a while and then nothing (not even an error) and there is no remaining process seen either. As a result I am not able to configure my Net8 at all.
Someone please help.
