Nate,

There is no clear-cut best suite combo that I know of. Not yet. Informix 9.x and the Web Datablade are a good option to consider for now.

I was like you back in '97 and was new to the Web<->DB world when I came to http://www.koz.com (was a Unix Client/Server apps person). KOZ was just switching from Illustra to Informix 9.12 with the Web Datablade. It does the trick for us. It allows you to define your own types in the database, write your own database procedures/functions in C, dynamic html generation on the db side. Version 9.2 is coming out soon and supposedly fixes ~500 or so bugs Im told.

However, I have (often)thought about if I was tasked to get a Web application going from the ground up on a limited budget would I try some of the Linux versions of the databases (Sybase or Informix) along with Apache with cgi or php. Im sure its been done before, and will be done since for VERY cheap. If anyone has experiemented with this recently Id like to hear your experiences please.
