Following is the dialogue between me and a project leader for an upcoming project. The argument is about what DBMS are we going to use. DB size is 7GB.20k transactions/day. Can someone say anything in support of sql.

Naushi,

Is there a preferred state of being for our databases? For example, do we prefer to put Oracle on NT and SQL on UNIX?

Could you please let me know? The versions of the software (DBMS & OS) would also be appreciated. I need to know by Wednesday morning.

Thanks!

Hal

Hal!

The bottom line is:

When it comes to using NT (4.0) as the OS for a DBMS, SQL Server (6.5) works better than any other DBMS - They say SQL Server to NT is like peanut butter to jelly.

But SQL Server has its limitations - based on my experience and talking to other gurus, you want to select Oracle(7.x - we are not going to use 8.0 yet) or Informix ( I guess Informix is out) if you are going to have more than a hundred concurrent users and your database size is more than 50GB. You also want to use UNIX (4.x) for a complex environment (100+ users, 50+gb database and heavy transactions 30k+ per day) since NT has its limitations too, but NT limitation is not a serious issue. SQL Server works only on NT while Oracle works on both.

SQL Server is just coming up with 7.0 which should reduce its limitations by far. I guess we are not going to wait for that to be proved.

I hope I answered your questions. If I can be of further assistance please let me know.

Naushi

Naushi,

Based on what you write, we will be going with Oracle since we may have more than 100 concurrent users. The next question is that while Oracle works with both OS, do we have a preference?

Thanks!
