Error Handling-Data Warehouse

We are just putting up our first application on the warehouse, and I would like to hear from some with experience at handling data exceptions.
Basically what we are doing is having each LOAD program write
the errors to an ERROR table (Oracle.)
Each row has a Generating Program identifier,
then the data itself is all in a single column, delimited by tabs.
The rationale for this is that every LOAD program has different errors.
The Error Reporting program then has to unmask the data according to which program generated it.
It seems a bit cumbersome, but I'm curious to see if there is a "standard" way of reporting errors and data exceptions - such as mismatches.
What have other people done?

Thank You!
