Chris,
There are several options to shutting down the database... One is to create a shell script which shuts down the database and then issues the system shutdown command. (run dbshut, and then shutdown -fr) An alternitive is to modify /usr/sbin/shutdown which is the shell script that is called during shutdown. Make sure you backup the orig. shell script, just in case.
I'm not sure why IBM dosen't use rc.shutdown, seems odd to me...
