Yes, you can turn off archive logging. You may want to do this to perform some file system maintenance on the archival file system or for some other temporary reason. You should have enough online redo logs allocated to run for some time before they fill up. You just have to make sure you turn it back on before they do fill up, otherwise the database will come to a screeching halt!
