Before you install Oracle, create a unix user to be the oracle owner, usually "oracle" but it could be anything. Also create a group to be the dba group, usually "dba" but it could be anything. Ensure that "oracle" has access to a large enough file system to place your oracle installation.

Do the install as the oracle owner user. There are a few well highlighted places inthe manual where you have to become root briefly. (mostly to make the oracle user, the dba group and later to set one or two things in the /etc/services and /etc/inittab)

When you've finished the installation, then you can be "oracle" and make a database. Then you can start it up and shut it down as oracle.

Actually, you can shutdown or startup a database as any member of the dba group.
