I need an EXPERT on locking

I need to know how oracle does locking on unique indexes with an update and an insert.

Does a unique index get locked on update only if the columns in that index are part of the set statement? If so what kind of lock id put on the index? SX or S?

Also what kind of lock does an insert put on a unique index? SX or S?
