Note that it is also available ON the mainframe, specifically on MVS Sysplex configurations including IBM's CMOS-based parallel Sysplex.
Pertinent to other posts on this thread, the Oracle Parallel Server for MVS comes with its own lock manager which uses the Sysplex coupling facility.
