Well, I don't know about checking in/out tables, but we use a product called MKS Source Integrity in our development shop. It makes multi-developer projects much less of a headache. Developers check-in/out files, work on them, then when they're ready, they can check in the file and provide comments on what was changed. It is possible to consider groups of files as a 'project', that way, you can see the big picture at a glance. It doe not matter what type of file you keep in the library... binary/text makes no difference. If you are storing text files, you can get the system to show you the differences between 2 revisions.

MKS Source Integrity uses that same algorithm that the freeware UNIX RCS program does, and is compatible with RCS. MKS SI runs on UNIX, Win3.1, Win95 and WinNT.
