It depends on your users' memory requirements as well as the size of your Oracle SGAs. As a rule of thumb, you can multiply your current VAX user memory requirements by two for a rough idea on OpenVMS Alpha. Add that to the size of your SGAs, then leave 10-15% or so for growth and to alleviate swapping. Make sure the Oracle SGAs fit into physical memory - you don't ever want to swap it.
If I were you and had the money, I'd trade in for the 8400. It'll be around for years. Note that OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 is the only version of OpenVMS that runs on the 8400. You'll need to factor this in if/when you migrate.
