Nuts and bolts about locking...

Can anyone give an indepth explanation of exclusive row locking, rollback segments and slots, latches that are acquired. The resource ID 1&2 refer to a rollback segment and slot. When a second resource is attempting to modify that same row, why does SQL*DBA indicated contention on the resource ID 1& 2 (rollback segment & slot information?)
