Wierd problem with DB functions

Ever since you could use your own database functions in a SQL statement we have been using them, but I came across a weird problem the other day. I wrote a function that used a simple decode statement, when I run it from SQLPlus using an execute statement it works fine, but when I include it in a SQL statement I get a NO_DATA_FOUND exception
Anyone encountered this ?
