When sizing ANY hardware, it is best to involve an expert if one can be found/afforded. In general you need to find out how much CPU power is required, my experience shows that for any RDBMS system you needs LOTS of CPU, and even more memory. Memory is the one thing you should not skimp on. Find out how much memory your supplier recommends and add on at least 25%. The one area of a system that must be got right is the Disk subsystem, you need to find out NOT how much disk space is required, but the expected transaction rate, and you then need to match your disk subsystem to this. Use striping and mirroring (RAID 0+1) if at all possible, this will offer higher disk I/O rates and excellent resilience. Also check out the expected LAN traffic, and be prepared to install extra Ethernet (or other network) adapters to cope with the LAn traffic, especially if this is for a Client/Server system.

I hope this helps
