Who said _everything_ had to be backed up in one day. And if the system is that big, maybe it should be distributed across multiple machine running in parallel. And if that is the case, then they can certainly afford to use the latest networking technology to speed up network communications. And then, backup different segments of the database individually to tape or disk in the round robin fashion.
