Except, if you'll notice, oracle runs just fine as long as I'm user oracle.
Just for the sake of discussion, I changed my system parameters to the ones you suggested and there was no change in the symptom which is that if I'm not logged in as "oracle" sqlplus behaves exactly as if oracle wasn't running. You've given me some other clues, though. Thanks a lot for your help!
