I set up a large decision support database under Oracle 7.1. The database was sotred on a RAID box configured for RAID 5. The RAID box was never my performance bottleneck. There were two factors that worked in my favor.
- The decision support application required much better read performance that write performance. Because I got a controller that could be configured to do read-aheads, read access was never a problem.
- The database was updated only at night when performance was less
critical. There is a performance penalty for writes under the RAID
5 scheme. One way of helping writes is to be sure that the RAID
controller has pelnty of cache that it can user for buffering
writes. When writes happen in bursts, as they usually do, if the
write can fit into the cache, it goes very quickly. If you do have
your RAID box cache writes, be sure that it is connected to a UPS!
