HOW? V7 Application Authentication

What is the recommended way for applications to gain access to the Oracle V7 server? I see two alternatives:
- Force the instance to run with OS_AUTHENT_PREFIX="" and use a well-known (possibly configurable) DB account with OS Authentication.
- Have the application connect with a well-known (possibly configurable) user and a configurable password.
If the preferred method is #2, how do apps protect the password? Where is the password acquired/stored? How is it managed?
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
