You don't mention your current environment. Without that info no one can respond.
For example, if you use 8mm tape you could upgrade your tape drives to a faster technology (DLT - see Quantum/Dec) or other strategies. 8mm does ~450-480KB/sec (if I remember correctly). IBM 3490 style devices are also faster. Or you could mirror the 5GB (not that big) and break the mirror and back it up as a point in time backup, and then resync the mirrors.
How 'bout more details?
