Yes. Oracle are deadly serious about entering the desktop tools market place. I have recently attended a User Group conference here in the UK. The big push was very much on the CDE2 toolset and Oracle7 for Windows.
Being the ex-Chairman of the UK Oracle User Group, it has been apparent to me that Oracle users worldwide have always wanted a Windows interface to the Oracle RDBMS. This includes the Oracle development toolset.
To understand why Oracle have entered the PC tools market place you have to understand that they are motivated by market share. Oracle have seen the explosive growth of their products in the UNIX market and can see a similar opportunity at the PC end.
The market will be very interesting to watch over the coming year as Oracle and Microsoft start to tackle each other head on. Another contender to watch is Sybase who have recently bought Powersoft, the producer of Powerbuilder.
The reason Oracle want to dominate the desktop is so that they can deliver their multi-media server and provide interactive TV, a market which Bill Gates has got his firm sites on.
Watch this space !!!
