It really depends upon how you want to bypass SQL*Net and from where. If you want to access Oracle remotely from MS-Windows and the Mac there are many solutions available that do not require SQL*Net on either the desktop or the server. They include EDA/SQL from Information Builders, SQL Retreiver from VisionWare, HyperStar from VMark/Constellation, SequeLink from Techgnosis and the DAL Server for Unix from Pacer Software (the company I work for). As far as I know, none of the solutions listed above require SQL*Net on the desktop or the Server.
