You don't say what the system statistics look like. How about some vmstat, iostat figures? 154K per second is not that high for disk I/O if it was all sequential but if it were all random inserts then for 2K pages this is about the highest number of operations per second that any drive on the market will do (i.e 77 i/o sec). Of course it may be that the log is the bottleneck.
