I know this is not what you want to hear, but I just used the left and right arrow keys instead of TAB. I also allowed the user to press C or Y or N (I was duplicating the Do you want to commit? dialog box for handheld terminals). The the KEY-NXTFLD trigger could do the appropriate actions.

Maybe that would be an okay compromise for you?
