Forms 3, Enter Query mode, and field validation

Background: Using Oracle 7.0.12.1.1 on an NCR 3445 and Forms 3.0.16.12.3

When in Enter Query mode, Forms doesn't perform any validations. This permits you to enter otherwise invalid data, such as a date field of %-JAN-94.

The problem is, any attempt to _do_ anything with a date field containing such a value will invoke validation checks. (All I really want to do is to see if the date field is null or not in the PRE-QUERY trigger, although it would be nice if I could do other things with it as well.)

Does anybody know a way around this?
