Problem when creating DB under Oracle 7/NetWare

We installed Oracle 7 on NetWare 3.11, but are having problems creating a DB. Oracle doesn't give us any error about creation of the database, but it doesn't work properly. If we shutdown the database and then try to re startup it, or if we down the server, after shutting down the DB, and then restart Oracle, Oracle hangs, and causes the whole server to hang immediateley, when it tries to open the database. It gets through starting up with nomount, then mounting just fine, but alter database open hangs everything. There is no error in the alert.log file, and no error from netware when this happens - it just hangs with an annoying constant error beep. Originally, we were getting some errors in the alert.log file during database creation, even though Oracle didn't report any errors on the console. We were able to get around those erors, though, by specifying larger log files during creation.
Any ideas?
