The following is a press release that I received from Merrilee Nohr, who is the IOUG Secretary. It is a press release from Oracle.

: ORACORP
SUBJECT: There are no viruses on the Oracle Office Demo Disk! REPLY TO: EHORSCHM The reports distributed on October 15 and 16 claiming that the Oracle Office Demo Disk (part number A13318) is infected with a virus are WRONG! We have scanned the disk using the very latest commercial anti-virus software and no viruses were detected. We used Norton Anti-virus, Microsoft Anti-virus, McAfee Associates SCAN 9.19 V108, and Central Point Anti-virus V2. The scans included the master disks used in the duplicating process and a sample of production disks.

The originators of the virus report used Central Point Anti-virus V1.4 in their scan that detected the "Cruncher" virus. We have spoken with Central Point Software's support staff and they informed us that V1.4 of their software gives false positives for the "Cruncher" virus. The individuals that originally "found" the virus used Central Point Anti-virus V1.4 to fix the suspected file. This actually corrupted a clean file and caused the demo disk installation to fail, reinforcing the suspicion of a virus.

We have repeated the scans with Central Point Anti-virus V2 updated with a new virus signature file copied from the Central Point Software BBS on October 15, 1993. This version does not have the false positive problem, and no viruses, including "Cruncher" were detected.

Please contact any customers or non-Oracle people that received reports of the virus and assure them that the Oracle Office Demo Disk is 100% safe! The demo disk is an excellent tool for showing the power of Oracle Office, and we do not want our customers and employees deprived of its benefits because of a premature and false virus warning.

On a more positive note... if you're not familiar with Oracle Office and you'd like an easy way to see an animated tour of its features, order the disk. It's part number A13318 and available from Oracle inventory. The disk runs under DOS and shows the Oracle Office MS-Windows, Motif, Mac, and character mode clients. You'll get a first hand look at scalable, distributed, enterprise-wide messaging and group scheduling from a user's point of view.

Thanks for your understanding and assistance with this matter.
