Thanks for the several responses - we do indeed need to go to V7, just a matter of whether I can do it now concurrently with V6 (for a project that requires V7) or wait until the next semester and go with 7 exclusively. I've had enough people tell me that it is possible/safe to know that that is true, but I don't have any pointers to documentation that discusses things like memory conflicts, system-wide logicals, and installed images (which got mentioned here). Guess I'll wing it.
