POWER function and Oracle V6

Oracle Version 6 power function only allows numbers to be raised to integer powers. We require to be able to raise a number to a decimal power.

        ie 5.3 ** 1.10423

Does anyone out there know enough maths to remember an approximation series for calculating powers , something like Taylor's series which can be used for approximating roots.

The series will need to be limited by Oracle V6 limit of integer powers and simple arithmetic.
